DO YOU BELIEVE IN ANGELS?

DYBIA is my first official project of 2024. Akin to my other projects, it is a surreal combination of my inner world, my dreamworld, and the way I perceive reality.

This project is an endeavour to emulate evangelical/spiritual psychosis, and the perceptions of reality this causes. How everything seems to relate and connect, in bizarre patterns. I have combined the use of religious imagery alongside stills I took in a self directed photoshoot with childlike elements such as toys, sequins, glitter, and simple illustrations. It is meant to exhibit the frame of mind of someone in a spiritual psychosis, channelling all these messages about angels. They see them as significant, prophetic messages, whilst being in this childlike daze unable to connect with reality- the way a child believes in the imaginary. Combining this with grotesque and morbid motifs shows the reality of what is happening. Mentally, the individual believes they are ascending to be a divine figure, hearing the word of God through angels, like Joan of Arc. Physically, they are in a state of chaos, they are so disconnected they can't process their own wellbeing. It breaks through the glitter-tinted and feathery daze

I aim to cultivate an atmosphere that exudes a sense of purity and warmth skewed with an unsettling undertone. The intention is to create an ambiance where the viewer feels drawn into an enchanting realm, navigating a delicate balance between comfort and disquiet. This is how it feels to be drawn in through religious and magical imagery, being surrounded by all these 'messages from the divine'.

I intend for this to be a multimedia project, I want it to have a collage format. Also using the motifs of evangelism and angels, synchronicities and symbols/sigils. I also want to link this idea of 'angelic beings' with the digital - with the recurring idea of 'machines are angels' and they try to reach you through digital means.
